World No – Tobacco Day

Every Cigarette Takes Away 11 Minutes of Your Life 🚭

To mark World No Tobacco Day (May 31), our Medical Team and Gym Committee jointly organized an awareness session with Dr. Javaid A. Khan, a renowned pulmonologist and passionate anti-tobacco advocate.

In an engaging and eye-opening talk, Dr. Javaid shared harrowing facts about smoking and vaping, urging smokers to consider quitting in pursuit of a healthier life.

He highlighted that while strict anti-tobacco laws exist in Pakistan—prohibiting smoking in public spaces and the sale of tobacco products to minors—enforcement remains weak. In contrast, most developed countries have implemented and upheld such bans for years, significantly reducing public smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke.

Following are some key statistics shared by Dr. Javaid during the session:
• 50% of lung diseases could be prevented if people stopped smoking.
• Lung cancer is 10 times more common in smokers.
• 8.2 million people die annually worldwide due to tobacco use.
• In Pakistan, tobacco consumption claims 170,000 lives every year.
• The idea of smoking “for flavor” is a myth—the lungs have no flavor receptors.
• Vaping is equally harmful, particularly concerning because it’s increasingly adopted by teenagers and youth.
• Alarmingly, in a 2024 study, Karachi ranked among the top three cities globally for youth vaping rates.

The session served as a powerful reminder that the fight against tobacco is far from over—and that raising awareness is a vital step in driving change.
